The Fundamentals of Project Planning
Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives.
Or as I like to say…
The art & science of getting things done!
Discipline is hugely important, the foundation of project management. Without this part, it is easy for things to fall apart.
At a minimum, a project plan answers the following key questions about the
project:
- Why? - What is the problem or value proposition addressed by the project?
- What? - What does your client really want? What are the major products/deliverables?
- Who? - Who will be involved and what will be their responsibilities within the project? How will they be organized?
- When? - What is the project timeline and when will particularly meaningful points, referred to as milestones, be complete?
Once the plan is in place…organizing can be easy. It’s OK to start working before you have EVERTYTHING lined up.
Managing is where the rubber meets the road the point at which work is actually happening.
When delegating give people clear objectives, deadlines and the information
they need. Giving too much information is better than not giving enough, especially when working with someone for the first time.
Communicating keep folks up to date! Request status checks. Over-communicating, especially at the beginning of a project, will prevent a lot of the common roadblocks that can occur.
Look to solve issues/problems quickly and calmly.
