Learn to spot ADHD in the workplace and structure jobs to support improved functioning and performance.
Many employers hire promising individuals, only to discover they are late to work, get tasks done at the last minute, and sometimes behave inappropriately. While these individuals can perform brilliantly and function as valuable team members, it is important to recognize what aspects of their diagnosis may result in decreased workplace performance. This information will help employers learn to recognize the basic signs of ADD/ADHD, understand what strategies are likely to make a positive difference, and learn methods for implementation. In the U.S. alone at least 8 million adults have a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. Many adults fear disclosing this to employers, but the costs include up to three weeks of lost work productivity, increased discipline problems, job loss, and decreased worker morale. Additionally, a large percentage of individuals with adult ADD/ADHD have never been diagnosed. By recognizing basic signs, knowing how to support adults with ADD/ADHD and play to their strengths, employers and employees can collaborate and overcome many workplace challenges and, with proper treatment, be as productive as their nonADHD colleagues.
