Many students are not experiencing academic success due in part to many barriers both in the school as well as the community.
Without a comprehensive approach to working with the students and their families and community stakeholders, those barriers will continue to exist and grow in complexity. Student support service professionals, which include: school social workers, psychologists, nurses, counselors, chemical health specialists, provide a systemic approach to addressing the myriad of stressors that impact our students in the classroom and those they encounter in the community. Through addressing these barriers in a comprehensive manner, these school-based professionals are able to connect students and/or their caregivers with community resources, school resources and answer the questions that may be getting in the way of the progress needed for the student to have some success in school. Until children are looked at in a systemic manner where their entire story is considered: as a member of a school, family, neighborhood, community, racial or ethnic group, then school will continue to be a place where their successes are limited. This OnDemand Webinar will give you suggestions and ideas of how to think outside of the box to meet the needs of kids and families where they are and get them moving towards academic and social success. Learning Objectives: •You will be able to identify student support service professionals and their connection to academic achievement. •You will be able to discuss student support service professionals as partners in the building school community. •You will be able to review tier 1 interventions and supports.
