With an increased focus on complete streets, public health, and sustainability; numerous new devices and planning tools; and limited funding for projects, providing safe walking facilities for all is both a challenge and opportunity. This topic will present the latest planning tools and design innovations for enhancing pedestrian safety and walkability. It will focus on recent trends such as climate change, active transportation, safety and security, and funding. Planning tools discussed will include GIS innovations, crosswalk policies, complete streets policies, and various methods for analyzing the quality of the pedestrian experience. Additionally, the audio conference will present design innovations for pathways, controlled and uncontrolled crossings, and accommodations for disabled pedestrians. Case study examples, with success stories and lessons learned, will be featured.

- Wrote an award-winning 2019 ITE Journal Article titled “Evaluating Success: Complete Streets Before and After”
- Frequently teaches courses and trainings on complete streets design topics
- Has significant project experience with respect to pedestrian safety, including Pedestrian Master Plans, Local Roadway Safety Plans, and partnering with the Office of Traffic Safety/UC Berkeley Tech Transfer as an evaluator for their California Complete Streets Safety Assessment Program

- Has significant project experience in pedestrian planning, including Active Transportation Plans, Transportation Master Plans, Station Access Plans, and Local Road Safety Plans/Vision Zero Plans
- Participates in Fehr & Peers’ Bicycle and Pedestrian Discipline Group which develops tools for pedestrian analysis and advances the state of the practice of pedestrian planning within Fehr & Peers
