Manager’s Guide to Handling Emotional Employees

Feelings and emotions are normal. Even in the workplace, the expressing of emotions by employees should not be discouraged. Expressing emotions become a problem when employees express strong emotions that become disruptive to the workplace. In this topic, you will learn that emotional employees can be handled successfully through a number of different techniques, including active listening, empathy, the use of questions, coaching, and reframing inflammatory comments. The material will cover how to recognize employees that may be experiencing mental health issues and how to refer them to resources that may be able to help them deal with their strong emotions. Finally, you will learn how to identify and handle potential threats of violence from employees and some potential interventions managers can use to prevent emotional employees from becoming violent.
