Identify the signs of human trafficking and how to comply with laws to reduce the threat.
Human trafficking, also referred to as modern-day slavery, is a complex crime that impacts people worldwide. Both sex and labor trafficking impact many businesses and communities in various ways. The problem is that human trafficking may take many forms and is often difficult to identify. Still, today, there is an unprecedented interest in the private sector's role in anti-human trafficking efforts. The Russia-Ukraine war and the COVID-19 pandemic have brought concerns about human trafficking to the forefront amid sensitivity to displaced persons, labor shortages, and vulnerable workforces. These factors--combined with a growing public interest in environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues such as socially responsible investing--underscore an increased awareness in anti-human trafficking efforts. In addition, enforcement priorities and civil litigation trends in the U.S. have begun to demonstrate more focus on human trafficking in areas affecting private companies as well as communities. This presentation will help persons in the hotel industry and other private sector roles learn more about human trafficking, state and federal laws, general caselaw updates impacting the private sector, human trafficking indicators that help identify human trafficking, and what you can do to comply with laws and regulations related to human trafficking to minimize risk.
