Environmental Issues and Agriculture

Agriculture accounts for a significant portion of the U.

S. economy and land area, and is subject to a growing list of environmental regulations including the Clean Water Act; Clean Air Act; Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act; Resource Conservation and Recovery Act; Toxic Substances Control Act; Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act; Endangered Species Act; and Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. While historically agriculture has benefited from exemptions from some of these regulations, frequent legal challenges and regulatory responses to court decisions are eroding some of the exemptions and raise significant potential legal liabilities. This OnDemand Webinar will provide you with the latest court and regulatory developments concerning topics such as the evolving definition and scope of wetlands, requirements for handling animal wastes and waste water, efforts to make ammonia a criteria pollutant under the Clean Air Act and what this could mean to farmers, regulation of greenhouse gas emissions, re-registration of pesticides and the resulting restrictions on their use and application, liability for misusing pesticides, and the continuing impact of the Endangered Species Act. Learning Objectives: •You will be able to review regulation under the Clean Water Act. •You will be able to identify animal feed operations. •You will be able to explain regulation under the Endangered Species Act. •You will be able to discuss greenhouse gas emissions.
