International Building Code Chapter 7: Fire-Resistance-Rated Construction

Maintain fire and life safety in buildings by understanding fire-resistance-rated and smoke-resistant assemblies.

Control of fire by construction is a critical element of managing a fire incident in our overall fire safety objectives for the built environment. Confining or containing the fire through fire-resistance-rated construction ensures that smoke and flame do not migrate outside the compartment of fire origin and impact occupants who are not intimate with ignition. This material will provide an introduction to fire-resistance-rated construction as described in the International Building Code (IBC), including types of assembles and their application. The material will also review methodologies for determining fire resistance as well as design and installation considerations for fire-resistance-rated assemblies. Finally, case studies will be presented to provide practical examples of fire-resistance-rated assemblies as they are applied in the field. This course will provide you with an understanding of the role of fire-resistance-rated assemblies in construction and the applicable IBC code provisions.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to identify methodologies for determining fire-resistance.
  • You will be able to describe the types of assemblies required to be fire-resistance rated.
  • You will be able to recognize the of role fire-resistance rated construction in fire containment.
  • You will be able to review listings for fire-resistance rated assemblies.
