Understand the value and importance of Requests for Information (RFIs).
Many federal contractors are overwhelmed with 60-90 pages of form contracts layered with owner/GC contracts to create telephone directory sized mazes, for those of you old enough to remember telephone directories, on a project that you must sign on the last page. This material will show you a useful tool, the Request for Information, which is a common form in the trade and as well as a formal form to gain some help in better understanding problem areas or potential problem areas both before bidding and after award of a contract. This topic discusses better ways to write an RFI and some poor means of how to administer or submit an RFI which can diminish the effectiveness of an RFI.
Learning Objectives
- You will be able to define an RFI in a construction/building environment compared to other requests for data typically found in construction/building projects.
- You will be able to the advantages and disadvantages of using RFIs on a construction/building project.
- You will be able to recognize an opportunity to use RFIs to make your project progress as optimal as you can.
- You will be able to review what some court decisions noted the role of RFIs in deciding controversies involving building projects.
