Turbidity Control and Testing on Construction Sites

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Construction General Permit which replaced the 2008 Construction General Permit.

The new 2012 Construction General Permit went into effect on February 16, 2012. Turbidity (cloudiness or haziness of a fluid) is an important parameter used to evaluate the impact of construction sites on the waters of the United States. The Construction General Permit will require the sample collection and testing if the storm water will (1) discharge into a waterway that has been placed on the EPA Section 303(d) list of impaired waters for turbidity ("impaired waters"); or (2) discharge into a waterway that has a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) established by the EPA/state. This OnDemand Webinar will provide information with regards to the NPDES Construction General Permit, turbidity, the Clean Water Act, established standards for turbidity, the TMDL in impaired waters, erosion controls to reduce turbidity in storm water runoff, and turbidity sample collection, testing and reporting. The program will allow you to understand the impact of construction activities to the waters of the United States, and what federal/state regulations are in place to prohibit such impact. Learning Objectives: •You will be able to define turbidity. •You will be able to discuss controlling erosion and runoff. •You will be able to review sampling requirements. •You will be able to identify examples of erosion controls to reduce turbidity.
