Learn how to improve access to public toilets and overcome the challenges of providing them in public areas.
With the ever increasing opioid crisis and inadequate Federal housing assistance, more and more people are becoming unhoused and living on the streets. Urban cities all across America are being challenged on how to handle this disturbing trend. Tents on sidewalks and public spaces are presenting new challenges to public works departments all across America. San Francisco public works response has been to develop a very simple yet effective solution to deal with the problem of human and animal waste on the streets public restrooms by with paid attendants. This unique combination of a workforce development program to strategically address a municipal issue is proving to yield very positive results. While at first glance the job may appear fairly simple, pit stop attendants must possess a unique mix of traits including acute emotional intelligence, de-escalation skills and an ability to identify and communicate with a wide range of behavioral and mental health issues from the clients they serve. This topic will help you strategically think about the very real daily challenges encountered at the pit stops which are often located in some of the most dangerous and chaotic intersections within our urban centers.
