Helping Students With Disabilities Prepare for College: What Educators and Advocates Need to Know

The transition from high school to post-secondary education can be difficult for all students, as they deal with new found freedom and increased academic demands.

Students with disabilities have the added responsibility of self-disclosing their conditions in order to receive appropriate and effective accommodations. Without a well thought out and executed plan, the path to college and ultimately graduation can be filled with obstacles, stumbling blocks, and misinformation for these students. This on-demand webinar provides teachers/counselors, administrators, psychologists, parents, and educational consultants with the latest, most up-to-date information that students with disabilities need to know as they transition to college. Topics to be discussed include: applicable laws/legislation, the difference between K-12 and private school special education services, and accommodations available at the post-secondary level, documentation guidelines, and guidance on how to identify the best student/college match. In addition, information on emerging disabilities in higher education will be presented along with examples of commonly utilized accommodations. Throughout this on-demand webinar, the presenters utilize an approach that is student centered, collaborative, and focused on self-determination and student development. This program is invaluable for those seeking to prepare students with disabilities for the challenges, opportunities, and difficult questions inherent in the transition process. Learning Objectives: •You will be able to review the Americans with Disabilities Amendment Act. •You will be able to discuss the wide spectrum of supports on college campuses. •You will be able to explain emerging disabilities on college campus.
