A startling 13% of adults in the United States have significant mobility challenges per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, underscoring the importance of public restroom accessibility.
Public restrooms are frequented by people with temporary disabilities including those who use mobility equipment, i.e., crutches, and parents with strollers and who need to change diapers. This information will enable owners, contractors, architects, designers, operations managers and lawyers to identify and/or design accessible public restrooms, whether for individual restrooms or restrooms with multiple stalls. Specific details concerning the many accessories within a restroom will be reviewed, including how each feature's size and location relates to accessibility. Armed with this knowledge, attendees will be able to review and assess updates that may be needed to make an existing facility conform as best as possible to ADA standards.
Learning Objectives
- You will be able to define the differences between the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the International Code Council (ICC) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
- You will be able to explain where standard bathroom accessories are to be located within restrooms.
- You will be able to identify complying and non-complying accessible features in restrooms.
- You will be able to review existing facilities and determine whether they meet accessibility standards.
