Learn how to calculate design loads to be flexible and provide allowances to accommodate a wide variety of potential tenant needs.
The vast majority of commercial buildings today are existing building stock constructed over ten years ago when the cost of energy was cheap and building construction codes did not regulate energy efficiency, and the buildings were largely owner occupied. Thus, their calculated design loads were specific only to known owner intended usage. Times have changed. Most commercial buildings now are leased to tenants from the outside and who only have a planned occupancy ranging from as little as one year to over 20 years, and having different design loads. Even if the building is being newly constructed, its designers must calculate its design loads to be flexible and provide allowances to accommodate a wide variety of potential tenant needs. This information will address how to manage these design load calculations.
Learning Objectives
- You will be able to define tenant design load lease requirements.
- You will be able to identify critical building features impacting design loads.
- You will be able to discuss design load limitations.
- You will be able to review and evaluate design load calculations of others.
