White Paper

Public Speaking and Elevator Pitch Your Way to the Top

“Understand that the situation (your presentation) isn't about YOU. Always focus on the needs of your audience, and the best way for you to serve them. In the example I provided in my intro, I was referring to an all too common pattern of behavior that people exhibit when they speak. It's called: ‘selfish communication.’ Here are a few warning signs that you are guilty of this when you present:

• You approach the audience from a ME perspective.
• You DON’T add value.
• You ASSUME they care about what you have to say.
• You don’t tailor the message to the audience.
• You are BORING!”

“The elevator pitch is your presentation of who you are, what you do, and who you do it for. Got its name because you should be able to deliver that message in the 30 seconds or so it takes to ride an elevator to the top floor with a complete stranger and sell them on YOU. The sad truth is, in our ADD society we no longer have those precious 30 seconds to make an impression at business networking events with strangers.”
