Prayer Breaks For Muslim Workers Trigger Tricky Religious Accommodation Questions

 
“Tensions continue to rise between Muslim workers requesting prayer breaks at work and their employers who argue those breaks interfere with productivity and business operations. News reports from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, and elsewhere describe how employers are struggling with how to address requests for numerous prayer breaks at specified prayer times throughout the work day. In some cases, Muslim employees who are denied prayer breaks have walked off the job and are pursuing legal action, alleging they are the victims of religious discrimination. This tricky religious accommodation issue can catch many employers off guard, warranting an advance look at what is at stake.

A Closer Look at One Case

In the past, Ariens Company, a Wisconsin power equipment manufacturer, had made religious accommodations for Muslim employees who requested to pray in the workplace. In fact, Ariens stated that it provides prayer rooms for the Muslim employees to use for their daily prayers. But as the number of Somali immigrant Muslim workers on its assembly lines grew, the company found it more and more difficult to manage the increasing number of prayer break requests.”
