Overview of AIA Documents

Become familiar with AIA documents and the role of these documents in your next project.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) was founded in 1857 to promote the practice of architecture. One of the first issues faced by the AIA was the need for standardized contract documents. The earliest form document (a fee schedule) was produced by the AIA in 1866 and the precursors to AIA Document A201, the General Conditions of the Contract for Construction, were created in 1888. The AIA publishes standard form contracts for the both the design and construction industries and these documents are some of the most common and widely used contract documents in the construction industry. This white paper reviews the number of reasons for their popularity.
