New Jersey Sales and Use Tax: Streamlined Sales & Use Tax Agreement

 
The Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Project ("SSTP") is a multi-state effort to simplify and modernize sales tax collection and administration in the United States. Organized in March 2000, the SSTP began as a response
to the U.S. Supreme Court holdings in National Bellas Hess v. Illinois (1967) and Quill Corporation v. North Dakota (1992) where the Court held that a state may not require a seller that does not have physical presence
in the state to collect tax on sales into the state. The SSTP believes that if it minimizes the administrative and procedural differences among state tax jurisdictions, it will remove a major roadblock to the collection of taxes on
online sales and convince Congress and the courts to allow states to collect these taxes regularly.
