Recent $2.4 million HIPAA settlement due to press release error.
In 2017, a Texas health system agreed to a $2,400,000 HIPAA settlement arising out of a hospital's disclosure of a patient's name in a press release. In 2016, a New York hospital agreed to pay $2,200,000 for allowing media to film in its facilities. Given these cases, it is a good time to review the HIPAA rules on disclosures to the media.
