What is Delegation and It's Connection to Empowerment; McClelland's Motivational Theory and Application

What is delegation? What is delegation’s connection to empowerment? Delegation is the assignment of responsibility or authority to another person (normally from a manager to a subordinate) to carry out specific activities. It is one of the core concepts of leadership. However, the person who delegated the work remains accountable for the outcome of the delegated work. Delegation empowers a subordinate to make decisions. Delegation, if properly done, is not abdication. However, the opposite of effective delegation is micromanagement. Delegation is good and can save money and time, help in building skills, and motivate people. On the other hand, poor delegation might cause frustration and confusion to all the involved parties.

Empowerment is a management practice of sharing information, rewards, and power with employees so that they can take initiative and make decisions to solve problems and improve service and performance.

In this 15-minute video our speaker, Rick Baron, SPHR, CPC, reviews delegation and empowerment, as well as discusses McClelland’s Motivational Theory.
