Travel Expenses - Tax Planning and Guidance

Whenever you determine what your travel expenses are going to be you have to first figure out where your tax home is. It has to be a temporary work assignment. Travel and lodging expense is deductible for a work assignment that has an underlying deductibility mantra of “is it a reasonable and ordinary business expense”. There are special rules for travelling outside of the United States, for luxury water travel and conventions on ships.

In this 47-minute video our speaker, Josie A. Henneke, CMI, CPA, reviews the definition of your tax home and provides a three factor test if your tax home is not a regular place of business. She also gives examples of determining a tax home. Ms. Henneke discusses commuting between jobs, lodging expenses, temporary and indefinite job assignments, and what types of travel expenses are deductible.

Josie A. Henneke, CMI, CPA is vice president at AGS Capital, LLC. She consults for state and local tax issues. Ms. Henneke reviews and manages state and local tax audits. Previously she was a CFO of a venture capital firm with multistate investments requiring employee travel of all kinds. Ms. Henneke is a certified member of the Institute of Professionals in Taxation and a member of AICPA and Indiana CPA Society.
