The Future of Solid Waste Management

What will be done in the future of solid waste management? At least in the near future landfills will continue to have a large role in solid waste management. Data and access to data will be increasingly important. There will be continued, but slower, progress in recycling with an emphasis on using technology to deal with contamination. Future contracts will share risk of commodity fluctuations.

In this 15-minute video our speaker, Lori Scozzafava, discusses possible steps to get to the point of having zero waste in landfills. She also reviews how to manage that change and the need for a solid waste plan which includes decision making by those elected and buy in from the community. Ms. Scozzafava discusses legislation highlights and ordinances. She also covers how to make the most of your assets. Landfills could generate additional revenue with solar energy generation, wind power, landfill gas and composting. In all likelihood, as we move forward, our systems may become more complicated and different types of products will be generated.

Lori Scozzafava is vice president and operations officer of Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc., a national solid waste management consulting firm. She is an experienced senior level executive with more than 25 years of solid waste management industry experience. Ms. Scozzafava has been a deputy executive director of the Solid Waste Association of North America for 9 years.
