The CSI MasterFormat is recognized whether the project is happening in Maine, Utah, Puerto Rico and even the Middle East. There is a demand for construction specification writers and while most engineers write their own specs, architects often have a dedicated or independent spec writer. Some architect firms have full time spec writers; however independent spec writers are just as common. Specification writers have to be careful with their words and what they are saying. The CSI manual of practice lists procurement requirements that are there to get people interested in bidding your project and the give the general constraints on the project. The CSI manual also provides spec writers with details on information formats and standards requirements.

Mr. Kalin is a registered architect, CSI certified construction specifier, and USGBC LEED® accredited professional. He was a past-national technical committee chairman, Construction Specifications Institute.
