Strategies for Search the Internet

 
“The authority of the source of information is important in determining the accuracy of a document and its authenticity. The United States Supreme Court, for example, makes a number of its official bound reports, United States Reports, available as PDF files. By the Court’s own statement, should there be any possible conflict in the online text, the print version’s text is controlling. As these electronic copies are prepared by the Court’s staff and come from the Court’s own web site, they are considered highly reliable. Text of the same opinions from other sites may also be reliable depending on the source of the information.”

In this 7-minute video our speaker, Mark Giangrande, reviews the “best” authorities on the web for Internet searches; search techniques using filters, and combining Internet searches with print materials.

Mark Giangrande is a legal research specialist with DePaul University College of Law Library and has practiced law librarianship since 1976. He has extensive professional law library experience, having served at six law schools, including four in the Chicago area. Mr. Giangrande has created and managed law school computing facilities. He has written numerous articles and research guides on a number of subjects, including the use and management of law school computing, and electronic legal research strategies, in addition to guides for researching topical areas of law.
