Solid Waste Management - Where Are We Today

Where are we today when it comes to solid waste management? There are many aspects of solid waste management but the biggest portion we currently are utilizing is landfilling. There is more and more recycling and composting taking place. There is a steady rate of 8-10% for waste energy, which is a way of recovering the value from our waste through incineration and recovery of energy through electricity or steam.

In this 40-minute video our speaker, Lori Scozzafava, reviews recycling and the challenges that go along with that. She discusses the new focus on organics as the remaining low fruit to go after for diversion. Ms. Scozzafava also reviews how big business is supporting recycling. She wraps up this video by covering details on sustainability, technology, anaerobic digestion, gasification, mixed waste processing and collection, which is the largest cost of solid waste management.

Lori Scozzafava is vice president and operations officer of Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc., a national solid waste management consulting firm. She is an experienced senior level executive with more than 25 years of solid waste management industry experience. Ms. Scozzafava has been a deputy executive director of the Solid Waste Association of North America for 9 years.
