The accounting professional does a lot more than that but as it relates to the scandals that have been seen over the past two decades the most scrutiny has been on the audit side. In the previous decade, the actions of corrupt individuals related to companies such as Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, etc. exposed major issues within the accounting profession to where the accounting professions credibility was questioned by regulators/legislators/investors and shareholders.
