Odor Issues and Other Uncomfortable Conversations Managers Must Have With Employees

 
How do you talk to employees that have body odor or other uncomfortable issues? And once you start talking to them where do you go from there? Situations can vary, sometimes there is a known medical condition, sometimes there isn’t. In some cases when an employee has body odor or other related issues they may be in violation of a workplace conduct policy. That policy can include dress codes, health and safety rules, and appropriate interaction with other employees, clients, customers and the general public. It can also fall under conduct rules regarding not disrupting the workplace.

In this video our speakers, Linda Carter Batiste, J.D. and Beth Loy, Ph.D., review what not to do when talking with an employee. They also provide steps on how to have a successful conversation. They review the importance of preparation before talking with the employee, how to begin the conversation, and how to handle the different types of responses that an employer might get from the employee.
