Knowing What the K-1 Instructions Say

What makes a partnership return so difficult is that you not only have to know partnership law … you also have to think like a partner. You also have to know what the instructions say. The best idea is to pull out the different form instructions every year to review what is new. Every once in a while the IRS adds a change into the instructions so it’s important to stay aware. It’s also important to review your partnership agreement on a regular basis.

In this 14-minute video our speaker, Carolyn Turnbull, CPA, MST, CGMA, reviews the general instructions. This includes how to handle errors; the sale or exchange of partnership interest; nominee reporting; and limitations on losses, deductions, and credits, among other details.

Carolyn Turnbull, CPA, MST, CGMA is a tax director and director of international tax services with Vestal & Wiler CPAs, in Orlando, Florida.
