The IRS is focusing on this area. Don’t let them catch you unprepared. The IRS has promised an increase of federal and state scrutiny of independent contractor classifications. There is a heightened risk of government audits. The IRS has increased its enforcement efforts in this area. There is a 1099 Matching Program which targets those individuals who file only one Form 1099-MISC with their personal income tax return. There are now FORTY state workforce (unemployment) agencies that have signed a memorandum of understanding with the IRS to share the results of employment tax examinations.
