How to Identify Staff Skill Required to Perform the Tasks

One way to look at staffing needs is through reviewing the acuity of the project. The majority will staff based on past experiences and not review the skillset required to perform the tasks. Health care settings involving patient care have used methods such as Patient Classification Systems that determine the acuity or skill level required to care for a patient. Attaching a numerical value to a skill required for a patient in ICU would require a different level of skill for care of a patient in a general medical ward. However, nursing staff will say that this method is not without error. As with anything, staffing is often based off a ratio analysis which could mean that you have a fixed number of employees needed for a certain metric. Those staffing ratios are ok but when it comes to the acuity of the project you need to look at it from the perspective of increasing the skill set of those doing the job to be more efficient or you need to hire those with the higher skill set and then your overall costs may be higher.

In this 11-minute video our speaker, Pamela Nelson, RN, BSN, MS, CCRA, reviews how to identify staff skills required to perform the necessary tasks of a project. She also discusses how to maximize current trends in staffing.
