Creating a Document Retention and Destruction Policy

It may sound almost cliché to talk about assembling a team from across the departments of an organization but it can be particularly important to recognize that information responsibility, or document retention responsibility, is not an IT function. Within an IT department there are reasons why documents and information may be stored in a certain way, in order to have backups, disaster recovery, etc., but an IT department’s goals and procedures don’t necessarily line up with what the organization considers to be important in terms of information and how that information should be managed.

In this video our speaker, Jack Pringle, reviews details on creating a team to assess current information management procedures. He discusses establishing goals and accountability for the team and the organization. Mr. Pringle also reviews retention of electronic documents, including considerations for security and internal controls.

Jack Pringle is a partner in the law firm of Adams and Reese LLP. His practice emphasizes privacy, information security, and information governance for financial institutions, health care providers, public utilities, and other businesses. Mr. Pringle has obtained the CIPP-US designation from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), and advises clients on the retention, collection, management, and production of electronically stored information (ESI). He conducts regular seminars and workshops on numerous topics, including privacy, data security, information governance, ESI, social media, and the effective use of technology.
