Common Design Mistakes - NFPA Life Safety Code®

 
This video covers three common design mistakes that design professionals make when designing the life safety features of a building. They include horizontal exits, exit discharge and multiple occupancies. Horizontal exits are very common, especially in health care. Common problems that are run into with horizontal exits are the number of exits, the accumulation of space, and where the horizontal exit meets the outside wall. The next common problem is with the exit discharge. Exits must discharge directly to the outside, however under certain conditions up to 50% of the exits can discharge on the level of the story of exit discharge … followed with many requirements that go along with that. Those requirements are where the mistakes are happening. The last common problem is with multiple occupancy buildings and the atrium provisions.

In this 13–minute video our speaker, Jim Lathrop, reviews these three common design mistakes and throughout the recording he refers to the different Life Safety Codes from the 2015 edition. He wraps up the video by discussing future changes including issues with security in schools and health care facilities, as well as future changes with health care occupancies.
