Challenging Work Conversations - Craft the Message

 
Crafting the message has six sections: Clarify, Style, Intent, Facts, Succinct, and Anticipate. Our speaker, Cathy Graham, reviews these sections in this 43-minute video and provides suggestions to make sure your message is clear before the conversation even begins. She reviews the need to clarify the scope of the message and what the biggest priority is in what needs to be addressed, rather than bringing up every past sin. Ms. Graham discusses how learning the style of the person that you need to talk to in advance can help the conversation go smoothly. She explains that you need to ask yourself what the best outcome that you hope to achieve is and to be optimistic for the conversation. Gather the facts before you go in to a conversation. Prepare yourself with details so you aren’t caught off guard. Try to be as succinct as possible. Write down the issue in a few sentences and deliver the message directly. Lastly, anticipating the response you will receive will help you go in to the conversation with confidence.

Cathy Graham is a certified business coach, organizational development expert, and an HR executive with more than 20 years of experience working with leaders and teams. She obtained her Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) designation from World at Work in 2011; and obtained the SPHR credential from the Society for Human Resource Management in 2002.
