Assessing and Minimizing Credit Risk

Planning ahead is key to avoid getting into a situation where you have a customer that is not paying and you need to invoke the legal process. If you do need to invoke the legal process to collect an obligation you will be giving your attorney as much help up front as possible. Many of those who have difficulty with the collection process can attribute at least some of it to inadequate prior planning. One of the most important documents that any business should try to obtain from any customer to which it’s extending material credit is the credit application. A credit application should be completed by the customer before any goods of services are sold to them on credit. You can find credit applications from many sources or have your attorney help you create your own.

In this 26-minute video our speaker, Robert W. Pontz, reviews critical information for entity customer including the type of business entity they are, the state of registration, the identity of owners, the length of time in business, the principal place of business, trade names and real estate holdings. He also discusses backup for credit extended and protection for sellers of inventory.
