Sales and Use Tax in Connecticut

Learn detailed information on sales and use tax rules and regulation in Connecticut.

Connecticut is one of the few states that impose sales and use taxes on the sales of a broad range of services as well as on the sales of all nonexempt tangible personal property. Due to the complexity of this area of law both in state and out of state businesses regularly fail to fully comply with these laws and audits of these noncomplying taxpayers can be costly (Connecticut charges simple interest at a rate of 1% per month on unpaid tax liabilities). Taxpayers continue to fail to properly assess tax on a broad range of services including labor for new construction, computer and data processing services, and management consulting services. In addition, as the economy has become more service based Connecticut has looked to expand its tax base by pursuing economic nexus concepts. State business and any out of state businesses with customers in Connecticut, as well as the tax professionals that service such businesses, must all be aware of current Connecticut sales and use tax law in order to avoid costly future audit assessments.
