Gain an understanding of pitfalls relating to the unauthorized practice of law and how to avoid them.
Today, you can find paralegals working side by side with other members of the legal team in every law office and many corporations. Paralegals meet with clients, assist in drafting legal documents, perform legal research and support with multiple tasks and projects under the supervision of a licensed attorney. In their day-to-day activities, they, as well as their supervising attorneys, should be able to prevent ethics violations and be aware of and remember the importance of avoiding the Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL). This topic will address what UPL is, how it plays out in modern legal practice, how it can affect practicing attorneys and paralegals, and how attorneys and paralegals can avoid negative consequences from it.
