Understand the considerations and criteria for design of a building supporting an overhead crane.
Overhead cranes present a unique set of challenges to the building designer, who must understand crane operating forces, serviceability criteria, tolerances, and special detailing requirements in order to design a properly-functioning crane runway. This material will discuss the interaction between the crane, crane runway, and the building structure, critical information and criteria that must be coordinated among the building designer, crane manufacturer, and owner, and layout of buildings that support cranes. The content will include methods for designing crane runway girders and connections, a discussion of special crane runway details, and lessons learned from construction of crane runways. This topic will present valuable information for professionals involved with the design and construction of industrial buildings and other structures that support overhead cranes.
