Are your employment applications up-to-date with Oklahoma’s ban the box law? It is common knowledge that felons repeatedly run into rejections and denials of employment.
This leads to recidivism, larger jail and prisons housing costs, and increased taxes. A year ago, Governor Mary Fallin signed an executive order directing state agencies to strike questions about prior felony convictions from employment applications. This initiative comes from a nationwide campaign called 'ban the box.' The purpose is to do away with the checkbox on Oklahoma employment applications that asks about criminal history so felons can obtain employment. This is most applicable in Oklahoma since one in 12 citizens is a convicted felon. Understandably, many employers are fearful of the new initiative and suspect it will foster an unsafe work environment.
