The creation of a critical path schedule is an art and science. Although there is no unique way to do so, there are certain guidelines to make it better and more efficient. In this topic, we look at two important steps: dividing the project into activities and estimating their duration. We start by dividing the project into the right number of activities. There are several criteria for such division in order to obtain easily measured and controlled activities. Next, we estimate the duration of each activity. This step is crucial because an error or inaccuracy in the durations means an error or inaccuracy in the calculated project completion date. Many factors impact these durations, and the scheduler must be aware of them.
