California’s contractor license laws protect both contractors and the public from unscrupulous behavior by those engaging in construction. Contractors and project owners should not overlook the importance of compliance with these laws or the effect such laws have on their business and projects. This topic is intended to provide an overview of these licensing laws and requirements in California and educate contractors, owners, and their counsel about recent developments in the law so that contractors can ensure licensing compliance and avoid costly, and potentially fatal, mistakes in their construction contracts. In turn, owners will learn how the license laws protect their interests and how they may affect the resolution of disputes between contractors and owners. This topic will provide both an overview of the licensing laws and also discuss recent changes and trends with respect to these licensing laws.
