The growing complexity of building code requirements often leads to uncertainty and disagreement between design professionals and enforcement officials in the design and permitting process. As the building code is modified by updating existing provisions, incorporating new requirements, and providing additional specific exceptions, the opportunities for confusion and contention amongst designers and authorities having jurisdiction compound upon each other. This topic helps those responsible for architectural design, plan review, and code enforcement to understand some of the common points of confusion in the building code that arise during the design and permitting process. This topic explains how clarity can be brought to the design and permitting process by exploring some of the most common areas of misunderstanding in the means of egress, mixed use buildings, vertical openings, and in existing building projects which are illustrated using the 2015 editions of the International Building Code and International Existing Building Code.
