Understand the strategic choices involved in making motions for judgment as a matter of law or new trial.
In any federal trial, one of the most critical timeframes occurs following the entry of the verdict. Counsel and clients must evaluate what post-verdict relief is available and when and how the availability or pursuit of that relief impacts review on appeal. Questions also can be raised about staying the entry of judgment or providing appropriate security for a judgment pending appeal. This topic will help those on both sides of a verdict understand the principal motions that can affect the verdict, the entry of judgment and the pursuit of an appeal. Particular emphasis will be placed on the timing of those motions, the relief that can be obtained and how those motions affect a subsequent appeal. This information will be beneficial for counsel who regularly practice in federal court and litigants or companies who frequently litigate in federal courts.
