James W.C. Canup is partner and chair of the tax department in the Richmond office of Hirschler Fleischer. His practice focuses on financial instruments and products, including qualified tuition programs; real estate investment trusts; asset-backed and mortgage-backed securitizations; and corporate tax matters. James has represented issuers and underwriters in connection with numerous REIT offerings and various debt offerings, including trust preferred and contingent convertible debt offerings. He is formerly a senior attorney-advisor in the Office of the Chief Counsel (Financial Institutions and Products) of the Internal Revenue Service where his duties included addressing the taxation of REITs.
