Texas’ Training Requirements
All architects practicing in Texas are required to complete 12 credit hours every calendar year. Credits must be earned through courses that meet standards set out by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Of these 12 annual credits:
- A minimum of eight must be earned through a structured study program — such as a live webinar — while no more than four can be earned through self-directed learning.
- All courses must be related to health, safety and welfare in the built environment — a broad AIA definition encompassing everything from zoning codes to electrical systems.
- One credit must be related to barrier-free design — namely, the design or alteration of buildings in compliance with Texas Accessibility Standards, the American with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Accessibility Guidelines or other related regulations.
- One credit must be in a topic related to sustainable or energy-efficient design.
