Architects licensed in New York state must renew their licenses every three years and must complete 36 hours of continuing education before each renewal. A minimum of 24 of these hours must be in HSW (Health, Safety and Welfare) topics, and up to 18 hours of training can be completed online. Records of the training or courses must be kept for at least six years in case of an audit.
Many architects are also members of the AIA, and that organization has its own requirements for New York AIA courses. Specifically, architects in New York must complete 18 hours of New York AIA credits — online or live — with 12 of these hours covering HSW subjects.
