Continuing education is an important professional responsibility for architects for a number of reasons. In addition to being a requirement to practice in most states, it's also the best way to keep your skills current in a changing world. As new technologies emerge, new laws are passed and other requirements for the built environment change, architects who prioritize meaningful training will be better positioned to achieve success.
At Lorman Education Services, we understand professional development is about more than meeting a requirement. We offer training programs that give you the skills you need to succeed, no matter where you are in your career.
Georgia's Training Requirements
Continuing professional education for architects is overseen by the State Board of Architecture and Interior Design. Based on recommendations by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), all licensed professionals are required to complete 24 credit hours every two-year reporting period. Of these, 16 must be in a topic related to health, safety and welfare in the built environment. AIA-approved courses that fulfill this requirement cover a wide range of topics, including building design, land use analysis, architectural programming and more.
The remaining credit hours can be fulfilled through courses addressing what is known as "related practice subjects." These include topics such as contract negotiation and cost analysis, which are essential to being an architect but not directly related to health, welfare and safety.
