Earn CFP Board-approved continuing education with our live webinars and online OnDemand courses
The CFP Board is a national nonprofit organization that promotes standards in training, ethics and certification for financial planners working around the country. The organization’s CFP program is a widely recognized certification awarded to planners who have "met rigorous professional standards and have agreed to adhere to the principles of integrity, objectivity, competence, fairness, confidentiality, professionalism and diligence when dealing with clients."
Ambitious financial planners can use CFP certification to attract new business and take their careers to the next level. According to a survey conducted by the organization, 85% of the respondents from upper-income households ranked the successful completion of a certification exam as very or extremely important when choosing a planner.
What Is Required to Become CFP Certified?
To become CFP certified, you must:
- Hold a bachelor's degree or higher from a recognized university and have completed coursework in topics related to key aspects of personal financial planning as identified by the CFP Board
- Have three years or 6000 hours of professional experience, or have completed a two-year (4000 hour) apprenticeship program
- Successfully pass a three-hour, 170-question exam held during three five-day periods at testing sites across the country
- Submit to a background check and sign a declaration of professional ethics
Continuing Education Courses for CFP Credential Holders
Once you have achieved CFP certification, continuing education is an important part of keeping your skills current and your registration valid. All CFP credential holders are required to complete a minimum 30 hours of training every two-year renewal period. 2.0 of these must be in a topic related to professional ethics, while the rest can be earned through any combination of approved CFP courses.
