What Is a 1099?
A 1099 is a tax form that, like a W-2, reports an employee's income over the course of the year. Unlike W-2 forms, however, 1099s exclusively cover types of income other than conventional salaried and hourly wages. This can include work completed on a freelance or contract basis, income from investments or real estate transactions, and more.
While any taxable income must be reported on a personal return, the type and amount of this income will determine whether or not a 1099 is issued. For example, while any amount of income proceeding from a brokered or bartered exchange transaction must be reported (on a 1099-B), only merchant card and third-party network payments above $20,000 are issued a form (1099-K).
